C is for Cramps & Cruciferous Veggies

Let's keep it real PERIOD CRAMPS SUCK! They are uncomfortable, they are painful and they really make it hard to go on with your day to day routines.


I know this because since my first menstrual cycle I've had the most painful cramps ! Some girls take Midol, I would take 800 mg Ibuprofen. And yes it would help subdue the pain but I could never figure out WHY I had such painful cramps.


It wasn't until I started FitsLana Fitness and I continued my education with a NASM Nutrition Specialization that I realized, I didn't have to suffer with debilitating cramps every month and the main source of my issue was inflammation because I wasn't consuming the right vitamins & minerals.


Let's talk CRAMPS 101, "During your menstrual period, your uterus contracts to help expel its lining. Hormone like substances (prostaglandins) involved in pain and inflammation trigger the uterine muscle contractions. Higher levels of prostaglandins are associated with more-severe menstrual cramps." ( Mayo Clinic 2019)


Our bodies produce Prostaglandins and the way to reduce and control how much you produce is by eating enough vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber, and by not over-consuming fatty or inflammatory foods.



Cruciferous veggies are full of DIM. DIM is a phytonutrient (plant nutrient) found in cruciferous vegetables. And when consumed regularly "DIM exhibited a significant anti-inflammatory activity was associated with reduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines" (NCBI 2019)



This means that by increasing your DIM aka consuming more crucifeorus veggies you'll decrease the production of prostaglandins which reduces your chances of inflammation and pain, thus reducing your painful menstrual cramps.


DIM consumption also decreases endometrial cell life which could mean that the cells would have less time to grow on the pelvic walls and cause heavy, painful periods.


I am not a big fan of cruciferous veggies, they make me very gaseous which is why I rarely eat them and also suffered for years with painful cramps.
